The Genealogy of Branching Processes and the Age of Our Most Recent Common Ancestor
We obtain a weak approximation for the reduced family tree in a near-critical Markov branching process when the time interval considered is long; we also extend Yaglom's theorem and the exponential law to this case. These results are then applied to the problem of estimating the age of our most recent common female ancestor, using mitochondria1 DNA sequences taken from a sample of contemporary ...
متن کاملThe distribution and most recent common ancestor of the 17q21 inversion in humans.
The polymorphic inversion on 17q21, sometimes called the microtubular associated protein tau (MAPT) inversion, is an approximately 900 kb inversion found primarily in Europeans and Southwest Asians. We have identified 21 SNPs that act as markers of the inverted, i.e., H2, haplotype. The inversion is found at the highest frequencies in Southwest Asia and Southern Europe (frequencies of approxima...
متن کاملDynamics of the time to the most recent common ancestor in a large branching population
If we follow an asexually reproducing population through time, then the amount of time that has passed since the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of all current individuals lived will change as time progresses. The resulting “MRCA age” process has been studied previously when the population has a constant large size and evolves via the diffusion limit of standard Wright-Fisher dynamics. For a...
متن کاملThe Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor Does Not (Usually) Approximate the Date of Divergence
With the advent of more sophisticated models and increase in computational power, an ever-growing amount of information can be extracted from DNA sequence data. In particular, recent advances have allowed researchers to estimate the date of historical events for a group of interest including time to most recent common ancestor (TMRCA), dates of specific nodes in a phylogeny, and the date of div...
متن کاملEvolution of the most recent common ancestor of a population with no selection
We consider the evolution of a population of fixed size with no selection. The number of generations G to reach the first common ancestor evolves in time. This evolution can be described by a simple Markov process which allows one to calculate several characteristics of the time dependence of G. We also study how G is correlated to the genetic diversity.
